Syrupmakers blast Tigers in basketball opener

The Cairo Syrupmaker basketball team opened the 2007-2008 basketball season with a 91-46 blowout of the Jefferson County Tigers last Saturday night at the Cairo gym. "I thought we came out strong, and the kept the tempo up throughout the game, we've still got a lot to work on, but this was a good start for us, said Cairo coach Isaiah Chance.
 
The Syrupmakers led 26-12 after the first quarter,and led by 20, 48-28 by the half.  In the second half, Cairo went up 77-33 and with a running clock finished strong, 91-46.  It was all Cairo from the tip off as the Makers had four players in double figures and cleared the benches, giving everyone playing time inthe season opener.
 
Cairo's Terrence Bowman led all scorers with 28 points, including three- pointers.  Stephen Francis had 15 points in the win, and Stevie Stephens added 14, with four big three point baskets.  Jacolby Griffin added 11 points in the big win.
 
Cairo is set to host Thomas County Central this Tuesday night.  The Syrupmaids tip off at 6pm, and the boys will follow afterwards. Saturday's game with Bainbridge has been cancelled because of the Syrupmaker football team playing in the Georgia Dome in the state AAA play
