The Cairo Syrupmaids saw their 2007 season come to an end last weekend at the
GHSA State Sectional Softball Tournament held in Dublin, GA. The Syrupmaids
lost Friday night to South Effingham 6-1, and on Saturday to Ola High School
11-0.
The Maids opened the playoffs with the South Effingham Mustangs who are 25-11-1
on the 2007 season. The Syrupmaids took the lead in the first inning, when
Blair Bracewell reached on a base hit, and Jennifer Donalson drove her in with a
double. However, that would be all the scoring the Maids would muster as
the Mustangs scored one in the fourth, three more in the fifth, and added two
more runs in the sixth inning.
Bracewll was 2-4, Donalson was 2-3, as well as Kayla Pope, who went 2-3. Ashely
Holt, Casey Joiner, Kristen Curles, and Ashley Cumbie all had hits in the loss.
Joiner picked up the loss on the mound, allowing five hits, two strikeouts and
no walks.
On Saturday, the Maids played the Ola Mustangs. The Mustangs shut out the Maids
with one run in the first, and two runs in both the second and third innings.
The Mustangs added three more in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more runs
in the sixth,
Cairo struggled at the plate, with Blair Bracewell, Katelynn Knight, and Kayla
Pope picking up Cairo's only hits. In fact they were Cairo's only baserunners
in the game. Both sets of Mustangs advanced to the next round, with the
Mustangs of South Effingham advancing to the state finals to be held next
weekend. Ola lost to Eagles Landing Saturday afternoon to finish the season
26-13. The Syrupmaids finish the season with an 19-8 record.
